Choosing a Degree
At the Army Education Center, we can assist you in the process of exploring what
degree major and occupational field would best suit your unique personality style,
interests, and preferences. Come by the education center in person, or contact us
now if you would like to take one of the following assessments.
Strong
Interest Inventory–This assessment takes approximately 30 minutes
to complete and contains 317 items that measure your interest in a wide range of
occupations, work styles, and different types of people. Your interests are compared
to the profiles of those who work in various occupational fields and report great
work satisfaction. Your personal SII interpretation includes individualized advice
on which career fields may best suit you.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
(MBTI)–The most widely used personality inventory in the world, the
MBTI identifies the characteristics that are unique to your specific personality
type. Once you know your distinct personality type, you can explore which degree
majors and careers would likely be the most fulfilling for you. This assessment
takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. As another option, you may complete
an online
assessment that is designed after the MBTI; then simply make an appointment
with an education center counselor so that you may discuss with him or her your
results.
Self-Directed Search–By matching individual traits with work environment
types, the SDS facilitates the identification of career fields that would best match
a person’s profile. This assessment may take 40-60 minutes to complete, and then
a counselor will review and discuss the results with you.
Occupational Outlook Handbook–This online
resource will tell you anything and everything you want to know about a given occupational
field.
